COMPRESSION (quality of your photo`s)

More compression of jpg/jpeg files means less the volume of data to store. In other words, a part of the information is simply omitted. The higher the compression, the more information is lost, and the quality of the recording would be lower.
For high quality photos it is essential that the compression as low as possible. Depending on your camera, you can set the compression low mode) or the quality of the picture (highest quality, super fine). Consult the manual of your camera!

A high quality (low compression) means that your picture needs more space on the memory card. To save space, never change the quality of your photo, but the resolution: you can still enlarge a photo taken with lower resolution but with a super fine quality. Conversely, a photo taken with a low quality and high resolution can be very ugly, and it is perhaps only suitable for smaller print than it was meant.

RESOLUTION

The resolution is the amount of the pixels in an image. The resolution of an image determines the maximal print size with a certain quality. Higher resolution means bigger prints. A page in your photo album needs to have a much higher resolution than a photo on a website.

For a good quality photo printing, a resolution of at least 180 pixel per inch is required. This means that an image of 1600x1200 pixels can be print on a size of 12x8 inch. You get better results if you use 300 pixels per inch. Our example get thus a format of 4x6 inch.

If you have enough space on the memory card, or you have the ability to regularly copy it on a CD or DVD, take always photos with the highest resolution.

If you have only a limited space, the best setting is 1600x1200 pixel. However, this is really not enough for larger sizes than A4! For specially cases, when you will make an exceptional photo, you must set the resolution for the highest possible value.

The compression should ALWAYS be the best (highest) quality, and leave it so!
