WHITE BALANCE
The white balance is the electronic compensation for the color temperature. This is a digital photography solution for different, sometimes unpredictable, colors of light. It is a very useful tool to set the colors of your photo as you want to. It works basically like digital "sunglasses" for your camera: what your device shall "see" depends on the color of the glass.
Read the manual of your camera about the white balance. Most digital camera `s offer pre-programmed settings, such as auto, daylight, cloudy, fluorescent light, flash and more. The auto setting can be fail in some situation. It is better to learn recognize a few exceptions:
- Daylight: sunset, sunrise, sunlight in the early morning and late afternoon, when the sun has a yellow-orange color.
- Cloudy: 80-100% cloudy weather, snow.
- Tungsten: if the light source is a normal lamp without flash.
- Tl light: if the light source is a fluorescent lamp without flash.
- Flash: if flash is used (otherwise the colors would be really dead). Sunsets could be deep red with this setting, try it!
After you've taken the picture, always evaluate if the results on the LCD screen are the same as the actual scene. If it is necessary, take multiple photos with different settings.

CUSTOM SETTING
Some camera `s offers the custom setting: you determine the white balance by using a white surface. A white card is a handy tool (you can get it at many photography stores) or a piece (perfect) white thick card - but of course, you need to take it with you!
Custom whit balance give you the best results usually in cloudy weather, rain and heavy snow. Please note, the position of the camera during the setting of white balance need to be the same as during the photography. In other words, put the white card between the subject and your camera, set the white balance and then take the picture.

BACKDOOR TIP
If you are not allowed to adjust the white balance of (each) photo by a reason (impatient fellows?), or you are not yet familiar with its use, there is also intermediate solution:
1: Set your white balance in the (estimated) most suitable setting (see list above). In snowy/rainy/heavy cloudy weather use always "cloudy". Please take always two pictures: one with the full automatic function of your device, and one with the chosen white balance (it is often a matter of turning a button).
2. Take only pictures with the automatic setting and turn your pictures in black-and-white by your computer if the colours are not good enough. Your photo album could be also very nice and interesting!
