DIGITAL OR OPTICAL ZOOM
Zoom is the decreasing of the distance to your subject. In digital cameras you will find two types of zoom, optical zoom and digital zoom. With the use of optical zoom it is possible to increase the image without losing quality. Digital zoom, however, is simply the digital enlargement of a part of the picture.
The big difference between optical and digital zoom is in the resolution. In case of optical zoom, the lens causes the enlarging and the view covers the entire surface of the sensor. The zoomed picture has the maximum resolution (detail).
Digital zoom is accomplished by cropping an image down to a centered area with the same aspect ratio as the original, and usually also interpolating the result back up to the pixel dimensions of the original. This is exactly the same as the crop an increase functions of a photo program.
The resolution of a digitally zoomed picture is considerably less (the further you zoom the less) than optical zoom. The lower resolution of digitally zoomed pictures means they have less detail.
It is recommended to use the real (optical) zoom. Is digital zoom than absolutely unnecessary? No, if the quality is acceptable. Use it in moderation; prefer going closer to your subject!
