POSITION OF THE SUN

In the course of the day the angle of sunlight is changing. The quality of light determines to a large extent the atmosphere and overall quality of the picture. Low sun is more natural to give a soft character and fine colors.

Some subjects can be photographed all the day, as the example above (Pont du Gard, Provence). To make a selection of your best shots is thus not too difficult.
Many buildings have only one main facade. The angle and position of the sun are thus very important. If the most beautiful facade of the building stays on the 'wrong side' when you come along, you have bad luck.

It takes not too much labor to prepare your visit. At home you can use Google Earth to determine the position of the buildings or the streets/squares that you want to visit. Pay some attention to the orientation of the building and use this if you visit it.
If you stay at your destination for a long time, walk around daytime (with the entire group) looking for beautiful views and take a compass with you! Then the following morning or afternoon, without anyone, come back on your own to make beautiful pictures.
