USEFUL GRID
Most good photos have a clear focus, preferably not at the centre of the image, where the eye can rest or it is interesting to be investigated.
Divide the image both horizontally and vertically with (imaginary) lines into three equal parts. The intersections of these lines are the strong points of the grid. Some digital cameras have these lines built-in, consult the manual!
If there is a clear focus, like a single tree, building in the distance or a boat floating on the sea, place it on one of the intersections of the grid.
When you photograph a landscape or urban environment, the position of the horizon has an important role in the composition. Depending on the subject, push the horizon down or up on the horizontal grid lines.
The use of the grid is ideal for portraits. Place your model so that it is 1/3 distance from the left or the right.
Pay attention to the focal point, the subject should be sharp - it can be the background of the person - decide yourself.
If you make a portrait, with a tight line as horizon, make sure that that line does not across the face of you model.
