SNOWFALL AND FOG

Shooting in heavy snow and fog is not really pleasant. The image is not only dark and colorless, the snow becames gray instead of white. The scene is usually underexposed because the camera wants it to look middle gray. We expect to light tones of the snow!

Actually, these conditions are suitable for black and white photos. You can take the pictures in color first and then using the computer to convert them to black and white.
Unlike ordinary landscapes, the clear sky means here no problem, because the color is more or less equivalent to color of the snow.

The right exposure is a major problem, using the histogram (if available) you can always check if the picture is made as expected (a clear peak in the right.) Compensation of the exposure (2/3, +1) is usually required. Learn to use these features!

Just as cloudy weather, it could be sometimes necessary to change the white balance. In the most cases it is not necessary, because the snow has a uniform color and the camera can detect this perfectly. Always check on the LCD screen of the colors match you scene!

PRACTICAL INFORMATION

The batteries function much less in the cold. Some cameras do not even start as it is the very cold - very frustrating! If your camera indicates that the battery is empty, usually it is not empty, just too cold! Keep the batteries separately as close as possible to your body (not in your pocket and not in your camera) and put it in the camera when you need it.

Temperature differences can causes condensation in your device. Put him always in a sealed plastic bag and then go outside. It takes a few minutes till you camera takes over the temperature of outside. You can retrieve it from the bag and use it. Apply of course the same, if you go from outside to inside.
